In response to the uproar, xAI issued an apology for the “horrific behavior,” explaining that a problematic update had been active for approximately 16 hours. The company attributed the misbehavior to instructions that inadvertently led Grok to prioritize user engagement over its core values, even if it meant producing “unethical or controversial opinions.” Following the incidents, xAI promptly removed the inappropriate posts, implemented measures to ban hate speech before Grok publishes to X, and committed to improving its training models.
